Yesterday evening, I prayed that things in the hospital will be plain and smooth. But as expected, one can never tell what will happen in my area. We had a CKD patient who is in need of an Emergency Hemodialysis because of hours or even a day or two of no urine output, plus the fact that she's having DOB despite her having her Nebulizations and Oxygenation using Face Mask. We couldn't get her O2 saturation level because of the UNIQUE set up in my hospital. So we rushed her to our Hemodialysis unit hoping that her conditions will improve.
When the Dialysis Nurse called our unit for us to get the patient, we just finished some pending task and off we go to the Dialysis Unit. Least from what we expect, the patient already looked different WITHOUT THE DIALYSIS NURSE NOTICING. O2 sat - not possible.
We are locked in a situation wherein an important equipment needs to be borrowed. Things like "its an emergency situation, can you lend a helping hand?" Time is running out. We already felt that the patient is not doing good and ICU transfer is imminent. I suggested to my senior to call the patient's attending physician and inform the ROD to suggest to the AP of an ICU transfer... and so we did...
Luckily, we have prevented any untoward incident happened when the patient is still under our care. We did our best. From what I can recall, the patient stayed in ICU for a couple of days. After that, we have no updates or whatsoever.
It is frustrating that this kind of incident happened because of lack of responsibility that is being rendered. You are a Nurse, please take good care of your license. Else, don't go to work or you might kill some innocent patient.
I am also thankful that during that time I was with my co staff that i can depend on. Life is a gift, we should be be taking good care of it. We are Nurses, the more that we should be stewards of the gift that was given to us.
